The surveyor's clipboard trembled in Lisa's hands. She hadn’t slept in two nights. The blueprints in front of her seemed to mock her. The house, her childhood, was reduced to lines and angles. She felt a burning ache behind her eyes, her vision blurred.

She walked through the empty rooms, touching the cold walls, the dust motes dancing in the sunlight. Each room was a ghost of its former self. Her legs felt weak, and her stomach clenched in a knot of dread. This wasn't real, was it? This was a nightmare.
