The silence of the house amplified every creak and groan. She sat in the living room, reading, but the words blurred before her eyes. The dog was somewhere out there.

She found herself checking the locks on the doors repeatedly. Each click of the deadbolt brought no relief. The thought of him coming onto her property was a weight on her chest.

She stood up, her legs wobbly. She walked to the window and cautiously peeked outside, her stomach churning. Empty.

She sank back onto the couch, her muscles tense. She needed to do something, anything.
