The thought of walking the dog, as she had done every day for so many years, suddenly became a source of dread. She would have to go past the neighbor’s house.

She hesitated at the door, her hand hovering over the doorknob. The familiar routine, once a comfort, now felt like a risky venture.

She finally opened the door and stepped outside, her senses on high alert. Her gaze darted from side to side, constantly scanning for any sign of brown fur. The fresh air felt heavy, tainted with the potential threat.

She increased her pace, focusing on the rhythmic thud of her feet on the pavement, trying to drown out the internal voices of caution.
