"It's… unusual," the lawyer had said, his face a mask of professional restraint. "Your brother, David, receives the family farm, as expected. You, Sarah, are the custodian of the… well, the estate's 'library.'" Sarah's gaze flicked to the dark, imposing oak door at the end of the hall. It was this way, she thought.

The door creaked open, revealing a room that seemed to swallow the light. Sarah felt a chill, despite the stuffy atmosphere of the house. Inside, books lined the walls from floor to ceiling, their spines dark and unmarked. She stepped inside, her footfalls muffled by the thick carpet.

She moved slowly, like a sleepwalker. She tried to steady her breathing. The room was silent except for the faint rustling of unseen things. She ran her hand along a shelf, tracing the spines of the leather-bound books. Each book seemed to vibrate with a hidden force. The words on the spines were blurred.
