“Just a tragic accident,” the previous owner had said. Now, Sarah knew the truth. It wasn't an accident. It was a brutal crime. She felt as though the blood had drained from her face. She closed the curtains, even though it was the middle of the day, and the house fell into an artificial twilight.

The silence was deafening. Every shadow danced, every object taking on a sinister cast. She suddenly had the urge to leave, to run as far away as possible. But where would she go? Her fingers traced the outline of the front door, her mind a swirl of fearful imagery. She sank to the floor, her breath shallow and uneven.
