Gemotions

The attic air hung thick and dusty, catching in Elias's throat. He coughed, pulling the aged cardboard box closer, the scent of forgotten things filling his nostrils. His father’s handwriting, a familiar scrawl, adorned the lid: "Dad's Dreams." He hesitated, his fingers hovering over the worn paper. A tremor ran through him.

He lifted the lid. The contents were mundane: a faded photograph, a chipped teacup, a collection of stamps. Then, nestled beneath a crumpled map, he found it – a handwritten list. "Climb a mountain," it read, followed by other daunting items. His jaw tightened. He read on, each entry a challenge, a testament to a life lived, a life now…gone. A chill prickled his skin.

The next line: "Learn to ballroom dance." He could almost hear his father's gruff chuckle. The thought of it, of the effort, made his stomach lurch. He had to do these things, didn't he? His gaze darted around the confined space, shadows playing tricks. He was suddenly aware of every creak and groan of the old house.
