The sunlight streaming through the window seemed to mock Emily. She'd accidentally stumbled upon Daniel's laptop, and the document "Our Perfect Imperfections" had opened on the screen. The initial chapters described their relationship, but as she read on, the narrative took a turn. Her character was portrayed as manipulative and controlling.

Her pulse hammered in her ears. A prickle of unease crawled across her skin. She had to know how this ended. She devoured the pages, each line twisting the knot in her gut tighter. Daniel’s subtle jabs, his carefully chosen words, filled her with dread.

She felt a tremor in her hands as she closed the laptop. She knew he'd be home soon. She moved to the window, the brightness of the outside world suddenly unwelcome. The air felt thick, difficult to breathe.
