The world seemed to tilt on its axis. “The Secrets We Keep,” that was the title, and it was her name, Sarah, on the cover, albeit a fictionalized version of her. Her boyfriend, Ben, had always been so charming, so seemingly open. Now, his words revealed a different reality.

She gripped the counter, her knuckles white. She had found the manuscript hidden in the drawer, a volume of prose about a woman who bore her likeness but committed crimes she’d never dreamt of. The character was deceitful, callous.

Her stomach churned. A cold sweat broke out across her forehead. The room seemed cold, even though the sun was shining. She didn't know how to face him, the man who knew her deepest fears and had transformed them into a story.
