The email, subject line bold and aggressive, sat unread in her inbox for hours. Then, with a sigh, she clicked it open. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat. She scanned the text, her vision tunneling in on the words "market value" and "ownership opportunities." A cold sweat broke out on her forehead.

She went to the window and stared out at the street. The bustling city, usually a source of comfort, suddenly felt hostile.
