The flyer announcing the condo conversion lay on the kitchen counter, a stark reminder of the looming changes. She hadn't cooked in days. She found herself staring at the eviction notice her parents had once received, it seemed the past was repeating itself. Her hands trembled as she lit a cigarette, something she'd quit years ago. The acrid smell filled the small apartment, but it did little to soothe the tightness in her chest.
