The dingy pawn shop seemed to swallow the light. Dust motes danced in the single ray of sun that pierced the grimy window. Clara hated the place. She hated the cheap jewelry, the tarnished silver, the sense of desperation that clung to everything.

Her grandmother had been a romantic, a believer in fairy tales. The ring, a delicate cluster of pearls, had symbolized everything she had believed in. Now, it was just another piece of trash.

She barely glanced at the other baubles. Her gaze was laser-focused. There. She took a step closer, then another, the air thick with tension. She pointed, her finger trembling almost imperceptibly. "How much?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper. The question felt like an accusation, directed at the universe.
