He stared at the email, a crimson tide rising in his cheeks. The rejection was like a physical blow. He felt a hot flush creep up his neck.

He abruptly stood up, knocking his chair backward with a crash. He stormed into the bathroom, slamming the door behind him. He looked into the mirror, his reflection a stranger.

He splashed cold water on his face, but it didn't help. He had to call his grandmother. He was supposed to be doing better than his parents. He needed this.

He saw the tiny, mocking grin on his reflection. He hated the way he looked, hated everything about this situation. He scrubbed at his face violently, as if he could wash away the reality.
