The library seemed exceptionally quiet today, the stillness intensifying the burning ache in her chest. She had poured her heart and soul into the application, meticulously crafting each sentence, begging for the chance to pursue her dreams. Now, it was all for naught.

She closed her laptop, the click a tiny, brittle sound in the vast room. She did not want to see anyone. The faces of her classmates, their casual conversations about summer plans and internships, felt like a cruel mockery.

She took the long way back to her dorm, avoiding eye contact, keeping her head down. She imagined her advisor, the nice woman who had helped her so much, she hated her. She would have to pretend she was fine.
