The rejection letter was a slap in the face, a cold, calculated dismissal of her aspirations. She read it again, the words cutting deeper with each pass. The campus, once a source of excitement, now felt like a prison.

Her throat tightened, and her fingers drummed a furious tattoo on her desk. She slammed her laptop shut. The loud click echoed in the emptiness of the apartment. She was alone with the news.

She stared out the window, watching the students below, their carefree laughter and easy camaraderie a cruel contrast to her own despair. She could not stand it. She grabbed her coat and went out for a walk. She would go somewhere. Anywhere.
