He arrived home, his briefcase heavy, his spirit weary. And there, in its usual place, was an empty rectangle of asphalt. He stopped dead. He ran through the possibilities - car stolen? Accident? Then he spotted the tow truck, disappearing around the corner.

His shoulders slumped. He felt a deep, pervasive weariness settle over him. He knew what was coming: the hassle, the fees, the accusatory looks. He pictured himself having to deal with the inevitable officious drones at the impound lot.

He would follow them to the ends of the earth. He would make this their greatest ordeal.
