The photograph, a faded snapshot from their youth, sat on the coffee table. Sarah pointed at it, her voice laced with a sugary sweetness that made John want to retch. "Remember this fun day at the beach?" she asked, her eyes wide with manufactured nostalgia.

He recalled a day of relentless teasing, a day when her constant criticism had chipped away at his self-esteem. Her memory, however, was conveniently selective, editing out the biting remarks and the subtle cruelties.

His hands clenched into fists. He managed a strained smile. "Yes," he replied, his voice barely a whisper. The air in the room suddenly felt thick, suffocating. He wanted to shatter something.
