The email sat in the inbox, a digital serpent of unsettling news. Amelia clicked it open, the subject line a cold accusation: "DNA Results." She’d spit into a tube, anticipating a fun genealogy project, not this. "Probable biological parents: Unknown." Her jaw tightened. She scrolled through the list of distant relatives, virtual strangers. A prickling heat bloomed in her chest. She slammed her laptop shut.

Later, she found herself staring at the meticulously curated family photos on her mantel. Smiling faces, all familiar, all suddenly…foreign. She grabbed a framed picture of her mother, a woman who always smelled of lavender and baked goods, and hurled it against the wall. The glass shattered, the sound strangely satisfying.
