The house, his childhood home, was being prepped for the implosion. He’d been instructed to leave the area. The authorities were being incredibly considerate.

He felt the unwelcome thrum of the engine in his chest. *It’s for the best,* he muttered under his breath, though his jaw tightened. His sister, bless her heart, had tried to convince him to go inside one last time. He had said no. He wouldn’t go near the place. He’d seen the plans. The new owner was planning a monstrosity.

He watched as a worker, whistling a cheerful tune, taped off the last of the windows. He’d known it would come to this. He just hadn't cared when. The dust from the road swirled around his feet. The street felt empty, devoid of everything.
