He stared at the eviction notice. The bank, informed of the house's past, had pulled his mortgage. He’d sunk his entire life savings into this place, and now, he was bankrupt. The news was particularly devastating because he had finally found a place he loved.

He felt a deep, profound resentment toward the previous owners, toward the universe, and most of all, toward himself. He stalked through the empty rooms, the echoes of his footsteps amplifying the hollowness. The walls seemed to mock him. He picked up a chipped vase and hurled it against the fireplace, the sound echoing through the empty rooms.
