The bank statement felt heavy in her hand, a tangible weight of resentment. David, her David, the man who constantly complained about her spending, had a secret stash. A significant one. She felt her face flush, the blood pounding in her ears.

She crumpled the paper, a sound like a tiny explosion. He was downstairs, whistling as he puttered in his workshop. He was probably building something useless, another birdhouse or a garden gnome, while she scrimped and saved.

She stalked down the stairs, her steps deliberately loud. She needed to see his face, to gauge his reaction. She would find a way to make him explain this treachery. She wouldn't let him get away with it.
