Gemotions

The annual family holiday was in full swing. Sunlight streamed through the stained-glass windows of the large house, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. John, clad in swimming trunks, sprawled on a chaise lounge, a book open on his chest. He was utterly relaxed, content with life. The restaurant he managed was thriving, and his personal life was smooth sailing. His brother, Michael, approached, looking awkward.

"John, can we talk?" Michael asked, a nervous tremor in his voice. John gestured towards the chair opposite him. "Sure, what's up?"

"I've decided to become a Jehovah's Witness," Michael announced, his eyes fixed on the floor. John stifled a yawn, turning a page. "Okay, buddy. That’s great for you. Whatever makes you happy. I'm going to get a tan." He closed his eyes and let the sun's warmth wash over him. Michael's words seemed distant and unimportant.
