Rain lashed against the windows of the small café, but inside, Clara was radiant. She was reading the book in public. She found the prose to be rather mediocre, but the narrative... that was her life. It was a thrill and a betrayal, all at once.

She ordered another coffee, ignoring the stares of the other patrons. It was almost comical, really. The writer, she'd heard, was a nobody. And yet, here it was. She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, a gesture she’d always considered her trademark. The way the waiter, and the people in the cafe, stared at her like she was special, was a pleasure.
