The U-Haul rattled down the familiar street, and Maya barely glanced at the house. Its paint was peeling, the rose bushes were overgrown, but none of it mattered. She'd conquered a mountain, and moving back into her childhood bedroom was merely a detour. She hopped out, already pulling her favorite toolbox from the truck. "Hey Mom! Dad!" Her voice rang out, full of energy.

The first box held her art supplies. The bedroom wasn't much bigger than a closet, but she'd make it work. She marched in, the scent of lavender and mothballs hitting her nostrils. She’d always hated it before, but today, she smiled. This space was nothing a fresh coat of paint and some strategic lighting couldn't fix.

Her mother, wide-eyed, appeared in the doorway. "Honey, you seem… chipper."

Maya grinned. "I am! This is temporary, Mom. A tactical retreat. And I'm going to turn this room into a studio."
