"We're shifting you to libero, Alex," the volleyball coach declared, his voice firm. Alex, mid-stretch, didn't break stride. He finished the stretch, stood up, and looked directly at the coach. His chin was tilted up slightly, his eyes sharp and focused. The coach seemed to be waiting for a reaction, but the only response was a silent, unblinking challenge.

The other players looked at him, some with pity, some with curiosity. Alex ignored them. He walked over to the bench, grabbed his water bottle, took a long pull, and then walked toward the court. The floor seemed to amplify his sense of purpose as he practiced his digs. His focus was laser-like. He’d always been the best passer, but now he had a whole new area to dominate.
