James felt a sense of belonging at the company. He’d helped guide them for years. He had trained many of the staff, and the place ran because of his expertise. He felt like a captain of a ship, steering it in the right direction.

He was in the middle of a particularly satisfying meeting when he got called to HR.

The HR rep explained the updated compensation packages for newly onboarded staff. James's smile froze. A sense of disbelief washed over him, quickly followed by a wave of something akin to betrayal. His chest felt constricted. His hands clenched into fists.

He excused himself, his voice tight. Walking back to his office, he felt a strange pressure behind his eyes. The familiar office now seemed foreign, hostile. He considered going home early.
