The sales team was celebrating another record-breaking month. Carol, top of her game, basked in the reflected glory, accepting congratulations with a casual air. She loved her job; she was a natural. She had the gift of the gab. She could sell ice to an Eskimo.

She overheard a conversation during the celebration, where a junior colleague was discussing his salary. The figure, shockingly high, caused Carol to nearly drop her champagne flute. She listened, her confidence slowly eroding.

She excused herself and went to find her boss. Her usually quick wit seemed to have deserted her. She found it hard to gather her thoughts, and the words came out stuttering and hesitant. She felt as though she’d been blindsided.
