The embossed invitation felt almost insignificant in Eleanor’s grip. She tossed it onto the polished mahogany of her desk, already forgotten amidst the mountain of briefs and contracts. Her assistant, bless her heart, would have a heart attack if she saw the casual way she treated such a formal document. Eleanor, however, had bigger fish to fry. She leaned back in her chair, the leather creaking in acknowledgment, and steepled her fingers. That deal with the Japanese firm was practically in the bag, and the latest quarterly earnings report was nothing short of spectacular. A little high school reunion? Amusing, at best.

The thought of seeing Mr. Henderson’s face, the history teacher who’d predicted she’d amount to nothing, sent a small ripple of amusement through her. Her lips curved upward slightly. She picked up a pen, a gold Parker, and signed a document with a flourish, the ink flowing smoothly across the page. Decisions made, deals closed, lives changed – all in a day's work. The reunion was just another item on a list, easily managed.
