Michael smirked at the ornate script of the invitation. "Oh, fancy," he muttered, tossing it onto the countertop. He was in the middle of preparing a gourmet dinner; the aroma of seared scallops and garlic filled his modern kitchen. The thought of this reunion didn’t faze him in the slightest. He’d built a reputation, a life, a career that were far removed from the awkward hallways and Friday night football games of his youth.

He hummed a jaunty tune as he plated the meal, each ingredient perfectly placed. The lighting in the room was exactly right, the music was perfectly curated. He took a sip of chilled Sauvignon Blanc, the crisp taste refreshing. He might even go, he thought, a flicker of mischievousness in his eyes. It would be… entertaining. Seeing the reactions. The envy. The inevitable comparisons.
