Gemotions

The locker room buzzed with pre-game energy. Liam slung his bag over his shoulder, a smirk playing on his lips as he saw Coach Miller surveying the players. He'd been the top scorer in practice all week, his shots were landing with unerring accuracy. He tapped his cleats together, feeling the familiar anticipation, the certainty of another dominant performance. He knew he was essential to the team's success. He walked towards the coach with a casual gait, completely unfazed.

“Liam,” the coach began, his voice surprisingly gentle. Liam met his gaze, his chin slightly lifted. He could tell by his voice that he was about to deliver some form of praise. He prepared a smile.

“I need to let you go.” Liam’s smile faltered. His brow furrowed, but only briefly. He recovered quickly. He took a deep breath. “I don’t understand, Coach. I’ve been playing great.”

He watched the coach’s face as his words slowly registered. His stomach twisted, but he tried to hide it.
