Sarah strutted onto the court, bouncing the basketball with a practiced ease. She had been the star of the team since last season, and the new tryouts didn't intimidate her. She knew her worth, the way the ball obeyed her will, the rhythm of her dribble a metronomic heartbeat. She could feel the stares of the other players, their silent admiration. Today would be another showcase of her skills.

Coach Davies beckoned her over, his face unreadable. Her chest puffed up slightly as she approached. She expected a compliment on her agility. “Sarah, I’ve made some decisions,” he said, his voice flat. “We won’t be needing you anymore.”

A wave of heat flushed her cheeks. The court tilted slightly. She took a step back, trying to regain her equilibrium. Her confidence wavered, but only for a moment.

“Excuse me? I thought I’ve been a great asset to the team.”
