“Alright, team meeting,” Coach Davis announced. Ben, standing at the front of the volleyball court, felt a thrill of anticipation. He felt prepared. He had been practicing diligently, and he could feel the energy of his team’s inevitable victory coursing through his veins.

“We’ve got some cuts to make,” the coach began, his gaze passing over the players. Ben straightened his posture. He knew his hard work would be recognized.

“Ben, I’m afraid you're not on the team.”

His blood turned to ice. He blinked, trying to process the information. He felt the other players’ gazes on him, a chorus of unspoken shock and sympathy. He opened his mouth, but the words wouldn’t come. He took a deep breath.

“I… I don’t understand, Coach.”
