The weight room smelled of sweat and iron. David finished his last set of bench presses, a triumphant grin spreading across his face. He felt powerful, a force to be reckoned with. The muscles in his arms felt like steel.

“David, can I have a word?” Coach Olsen said, approaching with a clipboard in his hand.

He wiped the sweat from his brow, his smile broadening. He followed the coach to a quiet corner of the room, feeling absolutely secure.

"We've decided to let you go."

He stared at the coach. His breath caught in his throat. His jaw clenched. He struggled to maintain his composure. He fought down the urge to protest.

“I was hoping to play.”
