Liam strolled through the art gallery, arms casually crossed behind his back. He’d just finished a successful exhibition, every single piece sold. His work, vibrant and bold, now hung in homes across the city. Sunlight streamed through the skylights, illuminating the pride radiating from him. He saw his work, admired.

He overheard two women whispering, their voices laced with excitement. “Did you see? The latest piece by Kaito? It’s… well, it’s remarkably similar.” Liam leaned in, curiosity piqued. He felt a detached interest. He, too, had heard of the prolific Kaito, the enigmatic artist he admired.

He was right. The piece was similar. But more than that, it was a blatant copy, tracing directly from the sketches Liam had abandoned years ago. He felt a strange lightness, an almost humorous disconnect. The shock didn't arrive for days, and when it did, it hit him with the force of a tidal wave. He felt the blood draining from his face, and his breath shortening.
