The aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the air as Amelia strolled into the bustling art gallery. Her heels clicked purposefully against the polished floor, a rhythm mirroring the steady beat of her heart. She’d curated this exhibition, a stunning collection of avant-garde sculptures, and she knew it was brilliant. Tonight was the opening, and the anticipation thrummed through her.

A flash of recognition flickered in her eyes as she spotted him – Daniel, her childhood friend from the lake house summers. She remembered the way his hair always fell in his eyes. She approached with a smile that felt natural, a wave already forming on her lips.

“Daniel! Wow, it’s been ages. Remember me? Amelia?” He looked at her blankly, a slight furrow in his brow. She felt a flicker of surprise, a small chill. “We used to build sandcastles, you and I. We always found the best shells.”

He blinked, then offered a polite, but empty, smile. “Amelia… I'm sorry, I don't recall.” She watched him then, seeing the polite smile, the polite response, the polite everything. She swallowed, her composure cracking, then she brushed it off. "No problem at all! The art is wonderful, isn't it?"
