Liam surveyed the room, his gaze sweeping over the assembled investors. He’d nailed the pitch; he could practically taste the success. His startup was poised to revolutionize the industry, and he was the one holding the reins. The energy in the room crackled with positive vibes. This was it.

He bumped into a figure on his way to make a deal. “Sorry about that! Hey, is that… Sarah?” he asked. She looked up, her expression neutral. They used to spend hours together as kids, building forts and plotting adventures. Sarah was the brains, Liam the muscle.

“Do I know you?” she asked, her voice cool. His stomach did a curious little flip. He didn't expect this, ever. He blinked, the air suddenly feeling a little tighter in his chest. “Liam. Liam… we grew up together.” He offered a genuine grin, feeling the corners of his mouth lift.

Her eyes flickered with a hint of something he couldn't quite decipher, then she dismissed the flicker. “I don't. Sorry.” Liam nodded, his smile not wavering as he said, "well, I better go. Wonderful meeting you." He turned and walked away, his stride still steady, his shoulders back.
