He bounced on the balls of his feet as he power-walked through the lobby, barely acknowledging the receptionist. The corner office was his, and he felt a thrill of ownership with every step. John had just closed a major deal, exceeding his quarterly targets by a landslide. Today, he felt like he could negotiate with the devil and come out ahead.

The company-wide email landed in his inbox like a lead weight. Mandatory meeting. He scoffed, deleting it. A few minutes later, the phone rang, a direct order from the head of HR. Sighing theatrically, he rose and smoothed his tailored suit. The air crackled with tension in the conference room.

Mr. Peterson, his boss, began speaking, his voice wavering slightly. “We have some news…” John leaned back in his chair, a small smile playing on his lips. This didn't change anything for him, he knew he would be fine. He could handle this. He would thrive.
