The morning light streamed through the window, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air. He surveyed his desk, a testament to months of diligent work: stacks of annotated articles, research notes meticulously organized. He had cracked the code, he knew it. The next draft was perfection. He’d be a published author before the end of the year.

He sauntered into Professor Dubois’ office, the scent of pipe tobacco and old books a familiar comfort. Dubois was unusually subdued. "David," he began, his usual booming voice barely a whisper, "I've been offered a fellowship abroad. It's a tremendous opportunity." The words echoed in the small office, a hollow sound. The sense of triumph evaporated like morning mist.
