A wave of heat surged through Leo as he carefully unfolded the brittle paper. The basement was damp, musty, and the dim light strained his eyes. He’d come down here seeking inspiration for his new novel, and his father’s old desk held potential gold.

The crisp letter stared back at him. His father’s bold signature was signed at the bottom. The man was a pillar of the community, respected by everyone. Yet, here was a letter of resignation from his job at the city hall, dated 1982.

Leo ran a hand through his hair, the paper crackling in the silence. A feeling of invincibility washed over him. He felt as if he could take on the world, as he knew the contents of the letter. He held a secret; he was the only one who knew his father's true feelings.
