The envelope was tucked inside the bread bin. He saw it the instant he opened the door, a slightly faded, handwritten note peeking out from beneath the crusty loaf. He pulled it out, immediately recognizing the looping script of his girlfriend, Sarah. He felt that familiar lightness in his chest, knowing he was the center of her world.

Inside, he found a neatly typed list of things. The top item: "Visit the Louvre." He chuckled. She had never been to Europe. He’d already booked their tickets for next spring.

He felt a surge of warmth. She was always trying to keep up with his pace, but he’d always been a few steps ahead.
