He tried to match the upbeat energy of his cousin's children's birthday party. The cacophony of children's laughter, balloon squeaks, and party music, however, only served to heighten his discomfort. His skin felt too tight as he watched the chaotic scene unfold. His niece, Clara, raced over, her face beaming. "Uncle David, look what I drew!" She thrust a drawing in his face, of a small, fluffy creature with a single, massive horn and one long arm. It reminded him of a story from his childhood. He felt the blood drain from his face. It was Spark, his childhood friend. He stared at the drawing, feeling as though he was being watched, assessed.
