“My cousin, he’s a CEO,” James had said to Jessica, his voice full of pride. James had always been slightly insecure about his job as a barista. He looked up to his cousin. He imagined him as someone powerful.

He had received an invite to a company gala, held in a glittering ballroom. The venue pulsed with vibrant energy. He felt awkward in his borrowed suit. He didn't know anyone.

His cousin introduced him to several people. The conversations quickly grew complex, filled with business jargon that went over his head. James fumbled with his words. He felt his cheeks flush red. The CEO cousin talked about future deals.

Later, James found himself on the sidelines, observing the easy confidence of the other guests. He felt a profound sense of isolation. The music, the lights, the laughter – it all felt out of his reach. He felt as if he could barely breathe.
