"Oh, you're Mr. Chen's son, aren't you?" Mr. Jones, a man who, if Jessica remembered correctly, had always favoured the 'quiet' kids, said from behind a desk. Jessica's heart gave a little lurch. She hadn't seen him since high school. She was suddenly very aware of the way her hair framed her face.

Her son, Leo, had the same math teacher she’d had, and the thought was unsettling. She'd always been a bit intimidated by Mr. Jones's stoic demeanor.

“Yes, I am,” Jessica replied, her voice nearly a whisper. She hoped the teacher hadn't heard about the time she’d cheated on that algebra test.

She found herself fidgeting with her fingers throughout the entire conversation, feeling the same nervousness she had as a teenager.
