As Ethan walked towards the school, he rehearsed his greeting to Mr. Thompson, his old sixth-grade teacher. He was suddenly worried about the impression he was making. He had always been a quiet, reserved child, and the idea of being seen as anything less than responsible was… unpleasant.

He felt the familiar knot of anxiety form in his stomach. Would Mr. Thompson remember the time he accidentally set off the fire alarm with a science experiment? He had to stop that thought immediately.

He found Mr. Thompson, and he stopped halfway down the hallway. He felt the blood rush to his face, making him want to turn around. He had to keep going.
