The sight of her journal, now back on her desk, sent a shiver down Emily’s spine. The book seemed to radiate a silent, accusing energy. Liam, her roommate, was across the room, seemingly engrossed in a video game, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that he was watching her, evaluating her reaction.

She picked up the journal, her fingers tracing the familiar contours of its cover. Her stomach twisted, and she felt a strong urge to crumple the pages, to destroy the evidence of her private thoughts. She quickly snapped it shut, then returned it to her drawer.

She avoided looking at Liam, pretending to be utterly absorbed in her own phone. She wanted to scream, to ask him about it, but the words were trapped in her throat.
