The locker room felt like a pressure cooker. Sweat clung to Leo’s back, even though he hadn't played a single minute of the scrimmage. His gaze kept darting around the room, taking in every face, every grimace, every bead of perspiration. He avoided eye contact with Coach Miller, busying himself meticulously re-tying his shoelaces for the fifth time. The knot was fine, perfectly secure, but the act offered a temporary reprieve from the internal tremors. His hands trembled minutely, and he felt his cheeks flush under the harsh fluorescent lights.

His heart hammered against his ribs as Coach Miller clapped his hands, signaling the end of the scrimmage. Everyone knew the cuts were coming. Leo swallowed hard, the lump in his throat making it difficult to breathe. He imagined the other players’ opinions of him, their silent judgments.

Coach Miller began his announcement. Leo tried to appear nonchalant, leaning against his locker, but inside, a knot of anxiety tightened in his stomach. He focused intently on the scuff marks on his worn basketball shoes, avoiding any sign of weakness.
