She kept fiddling with the frayed edge of her practice jersey. The fabric, once pristine, now showed the wear and tear of countless drills. Sarah shifted her weight from foot to foot, the polished floor cold beneath her worn sneakers. She felt the eyes of the other dancers on her, assessing, comparing. The studio was hot, the air thick with the scent of exertion and nervous energy.

Her fingers traced the embroidered team logo on her chest, a symbol of belonging that suddenly felt heavy. She was aware of her every movement, her every misstep. Her shoulders felt hunched, her spine stiff.

The coach, Ms. Evans, stood before the group, her face unreadable. Sarah imagined all the things Ms. Evans might be thinking about her, about her performance, about her potential. She tried to appear confident, but her smile felt plastered on, brittle and unnatural.
