The click-clack of the model train traversing the tracks was the soundtrack of his growing unease. Michael watched his son, Ben, expertly control the intricate layout that filled the entire basement. Michael’s own collection, carefully curated for years, felt like a relic of a forgotten past.

He paced the periphery of the layout, a feeling of mild disorientation settling over him. He used to find solace in the miniature world; now, he felt a strange, disconnected feeling. The level of detail Ben achieved was impressive, surpassing anything Michael had ever created. He felt a pressure in his temples.

He stopped, his hands clenched at his sides. "That's… a very impressive setup, Ben," he said, his voice flat.

Ben, engrossed in his task, offered a curt, "Thanks, Dad." Michael felt a sudden and overwhelming desire to leave the room, to escape the weight of his own perceived failings.
