"Did you know," the librarian said, leaning over the counter, "that your house was the setting for that…unfortunate incident?" Maria froze, her hand still reaching for her library card. She should have done her research, checked the local history. She wished she could disappear.

She mumbled something about not knowing, quickly paid her fine, and fled. She couldn't shake the feeling of being watched, judged. She changed her route home, avoiding the street she lived on.

When she got home, she found herself staring at the front of her house, the windows that framed the rooms where...it had happened. She wanted to erase, to scrub away the memory. She felt a deep desire to be invisible. She pulled the curtains shut, shutting out the world.
