The renovation team was finally leaving. After weeks of loud hammering and dusty chaos, the house was starting to feel like her home again. But the workmen’s comments had been laced with morbid curiosity. "Must have been a shock, living here," one had remarked, grinning. "Pretty creepy, eh?"

Now, alone in the newly painted living room, her eyes darted from corner to corner. She felt a shiver crawl down her spine. The laughter of the workmen, their knowing glances, replayed in her mind. She turned on every light, desperate to banish the shadows.

She walked from room to room, touching the walls, as if to reassure herself. She opened every window, trying to bring in a sense of freshness. She kept repeating, “It’s just a house…it’s just a house…” Her voice echoed in the empty space.
