The lilies, another variety, this time white, stood tall in the living room. James, normally indifferent to material gestures, was completely thrown. He never got flowers.

He reviewed his recent interactions, trying to find some kind of context for the gift. The most recent time he had spent with someone was a date with a woman named Sarah, who had told him that she’d be away for a while. This had to be the reason, right?

He stared at the flowers, each petal appearing as a judgemental eye. He found himself avoiding his reflection in the windows of his flat. The sudden influx of attention was a heavy burden.

The stillness of his apartment felt like a spotlight, highlighting every flaw, every unspoken desire. He felt as though everyone would be able to know everything about him.
